ACCREDITED PIANO EXAMS: Are they for everyone?
Exams can be a great way to demonstrate not just to yourself but to others your abilities to play the piano. However, with the wrong intentions they can be one of the main reasons students give up.
There are many Accredited Music exams options out there. To name a few
AMEB ( most popular and recognised within Australia)
ABRSM
Trinity
Con Brio
Saint Cecilia
Most examining boards offer various levels/grades and cover many genres and instruments. A typical exam will include technical, theory, sight reading, aural and music pieces. However, most curricula do not cover all the necessary aspects to be a good musician at that particular level. Therefore, it is important to find the right teacher to fill in the gaps, so that the exam is a true demonstration of your ability and not just a systematic way to tick the right boxes and get a pass.
The exams are not for everyone. A good teacher will discuss with their student/parents the possibility of exams and reasons for them. It should be a team decision and not forced. Here are a few reason to do exams.
Reasons to do exams:
Self development and gratification.
Structure and discipline.
Improve stress and nerves related to examinations.
Be critiqued.
Prove your abilities on the Piano.
To continue and compliment higher education.
To be a future teacher.
Can be done at any age.
Just to mention a few.
Reason not to do exams:
Just for the certificate.
Because everyone else is doing it.
Have no clear idea why you need it.
Already have too much on your plate.
Believe it alone will make you a better musician.
Nowadays examinations have become an easy way for teachers to teach. Everything is set out and all you have to do is tick the right boxes. However, if you decide to do exams be sure a find a teacher who wants you to excel beyond the expectations of the exam curricula. The exams need to demonstrate a great education and not a years worth of no stop repetitions to pass.
To compare and discuss each exam in detail would be too complicated. It would be best to dicuss in person with a teacher all the options available.
